Las Bolas de Fuego – Nejapa.
Every August 31st, the town of Nejapa, located about 30 kilometers north of San Salvador, transforms into a fiery battleground during the annual Las Bolas de Fuego (Balls of Fire) festival.
This tradition dates back to 1922 and commemorates two significant events: the 1658 eruption of the El Playón volcano, which forced the relocation of the town, and a local legend of a battle between Saint Jerome and the Devil, where fireballs were hurled.
As night falls, two teams of young men, clad in protective gear and with faces painted, engage in a fiery duel, throwing flaming balls made of kerosene-soaked rags at each other. Despite the apparent danger, the event is conducted under supervision, with safety measures in place, and serious injuries are rare.
The festival is a vibrant display of community spirit, blending historical remembrance with a thrilling spectacle that draws both locals and tourists. It's a testament to Nejapa's resilience and cultural richness.
